Let Us Pee

Let Us Pee
http://letuspee.blogspot.com/

Have you ever been harassed in a public bathroom because of your gender, perceived gender, gender expression, or perceived sexual orientation? If so send me your story and I will post it anonymously. Email it to letmepee@gmail.com

Why?
Because I have heard countless stories of GLBT people or people perceived to be GLBT being harassed in public restrooms... for what you might ask? Just trying to pee...

This is to counter the anti-GLBT & radical right groups messaging, which is that, particularly if non-discrimination legislation for gender identity/gender expression legislation is passed it will compromise the safety of women and children in bathrooms.

Everyone deserves to be able to use the restroom in peace and without harassment or violence.

- As a legally transitioned woman I was rousted from Dairy Queen restroom. I "pass."
- At work it was made clear that I was not accepted and had to use the family restroom. I "pass."
- At a Conoco Gas Station I was denied Restroom privilages. I "pass."
_ At church I was informed that they did not crossdressers to use the restrooms. I "pass."

Generally I "pass" well when alone or in with other women. However, when there is someone trained in identifying a Transsexual, I am outed. Who does the "Clocking?" It seems that the GLBt Transphobic crowd loves to point us out, not only to each other, but publically.

Before we get started(warm up the engines!)I just want to say that I'm IS (Kallman/Turner Syndromes)
I just don't understand this bathroom issue; one should ALWAYS use the public restroom that corresponds to how you are PERCEIVED by others.
If you need state or federal legislation in order to use a restroom; thats the real problem.
Most people in the world aren't inherently cruel/prejudiced,they can only go by what they see/know.
Less that 10% of adults have a college education;and far less that 1% have any problems that could be filed under "gender dysphoria." Most people are just trying to get by in life, and all of this contemplation/philosophizing of these great & lofty issues of life are beyond their humble sphere of existence. I'm sure anyone who reads this has gone out in public, and hopefully have not brought undo notice upon themselves.(I should clarify that this includes all individuals with any Intersex Syndromes, as well as M-to-F & F-to-M Transsexuals.)
We start getting into all this "sophistry" about gender spectrums,chromosomes,etc...,that un-necessarily complicates a basic tenant of existence. Light/dark, black/white, on/off, life/death, male/female...,just get out from behind your PC's and look at whats going on outside in "reality"; which used to be known as "nature" Unless you're an invertebrate or a cold blooded animal, there are only 2 possible sexes...,anything else is abnormal; and should be treated as a MEDICAL issue, not a LIFESTYLE!
I know that these are hard things to face up to,but I didn't create the world...,and I've been trying to get by for 50+ years myself...,

This is one of many reasons why I love the very simple solution used by some of my favorite cafes (and even one of our local high schools): have one-person bathrooms, and declare them usable by anyone. That means less waiting for bathrooms, no worries about whether you're using the wrong one, and no one having to care AT ALL which sex you are biologically or identify as or WHATEVER. (Me, I'm a very ordinary cisgendered sort, but I can imagine the difficulties.)

My impression is that it also cuts down on messiness and graffiti (people treat them more as they would bathrooms in people's homes), but I could be wrong about that.

What if a person is perceived as female by some people and as male by others? I've been using women's washrooms since I felt ready, and fortunately I have never been challenged or hassled. But I didn't know how I'd be perceived before I went in. How could I?

Most people in the world aren't inherently cruel/prejudiced,they can only go by what they see/know.

But what people see and think they know can be wrong. There was a case in New York of a cissexual woman who was hassled about using a women's washroom because she looks masculine. She still belongs in the women's room, not the men's.

We start getting into all this "sophistry" about gender spectrums,chromosomes,etc...,that un-necessarily complicates a basic tenant of existence.

You can try to dismiss such things as sophistry (or "sophistry," whatever you intended by your use of quotes), but gender does exist on a spectrum, and karyotypes do not tell the whole story of which gender a person is. Observation should show anyone that, and science shows more.

Unless you're an invertebrate or a cold blooded animal, there are only 2 possible sexes...,anything else is abnormal; and should be treated as a MEDICAL issue, not a LIFESTYLE!

Well, yes. Abnormal simply means "outside the norm." Both intersex and transgender conditions qualify for that. But such conditions might or might not be medical issues. You're right that this is not about "lifestyle," a word that is overused and usually used to disparage someone. I have a life, not a lifestyle, and in my case, my life is that of a pre-op trans woman. Emphasis on the "woman."

Your experience is your own, but it's always a mistake to take one's own experience and extrapolate it to everyone else.
